As a former embalmer, I am concerned and have been concerned for over five years of MRSA ( methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureaus ) in these deaths from a flu bug. Hospitals in America are filthy bacteria breeding grounds and the very health care system we trust, believe and depend on to keep us safe and healthy is infecting our communities with a disease that used to be an only hospital acquired infection that is so common in our homes, schools, businesses. I really believe the mix of MRSA and flu will cause more deaths than AIDS. I watched my father rot for ten months because of the status quo http://www.wisecountyissues.com/?p=62 which I am not saying is medical malpractice, what I did for a living was legal mutilation. But what is deemed, defended and supported as quality health care in America is going to kill more and more innocent people, mostly children right now, but the vunerable elderly are the next target and I can only imagine what will happen when this affects the US economy and health care system.

My name is Julia Nora Pilas and I have written a book entitled "On The Street Where You Live" www.juliapilasauthor.com I also have a www.youtube.com (type jnpilas in the search box) presentation. My dad died from MRSA he contracted in the hospital and because my cries fell on deaf ears I decided to write a book. I have been lucky enough to have had several Radio Interviews all wanting to help. Here's hoping we all succeed in making a difference.

I don't know the answer to any of these, but can forward them to the author. As you can see by the numbers, it was a small-ish study, so the answer may be merely that this is preliminary work with more to come...

Great post, Maryn! Can I ask a couple questions? Did the study conclude why no MRSA was found in the organic farms, or was that incidental to the study's findings? Also, do you know if the the farms were certified organic and how big they were?

Maryn -
Today's swine flu stories from ICAAC leave a question begging to be answered: If IV peramivir is effective in the ICU and has been shown to be safe in Phase I and II trials in the US, and Phase I, II and III trials in Japan, why has the FDA dragged its heels issuing an Emergency Use Authorization, and why have children suffocated to death in the ICU as a result? I think what Hurricane Katrina was to FEMA, this delayed EUA is to the FDA. It's a huge story; please break it.

I am just now learning about all of this and am very concerned about my 12 year old daughter. We were only 10 days into the school year, and she came down with the flu about a week ago. The rate at which it spread within her school as well as to me (her mother) and 2younger siblings was astonishing! We were all running high fevers within 24 hours of the onset of her first noticeable symptoms. Her junior high (which has approximately 500 students) had between 130 and 140 students absent last week due to flu like symptoms. However, the school is saying this is not H1N1 because it is too early in the season to be the actual flu. (This is absurd in my opinion.) Now, on our oldest daughter's 5th day into the illness she has developed an MRSA infection from a small boil on her tummy. Within a day, it has swollen from a golf ball size to larger than a baseball in size. She now has 2 places of infection and is running a fever of about 101.7 on her 6th, almost 7th day of illness. Her doctor has placed her on a high powered antibiotic, but she is feeling so ill that I am scared to death for her, especially reading about the complications from having both the flu and MRSA. Do you think the oral antibiotics should take care of it, or do you think we need to have her admitted for IV antibiotics. I've just been surprised at how long this illness has lasted and how ill she still seems to be. No one seems to want to talk about the flu, much less any other possible complications in order to keep everyone else from panicking. I just want to get my daughter well and keep her safe. Any advice? Thanks so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Valorie in Jonesboro, AR

My mother is currently in the hospital with MRSA blood infection. She had just been released after a 22 hospital stay when she had severe right shoulder pain and her port for her chemotherapy appeared infected. It took the hospital two days to identify the mrsa. Her right shoulder is two times bigger than it should be and her whole right arm is inflamed and swollen. They sampled the infection in her shoulder joint and it came back negative for mrsa. Now they think she may have a blood clot in her right arm from when they pulled her infected port. The port tested positive for mrsa. The hospital here is very non-chalant about the whole situation. I appears that this happens a lot and they said we should just gown and glove up when we visit her. I will not let my children visit her. They said that we shouldn't be worried. I am because when she was in the hospital prior to this she had a red inflammed rash on both legs that got larger as we watched it grow up to abdomen. They put her on prednizone, but it didn't work. They biopsied it, but nothing came back. I think this all started then. But the hospital said no. She has stage IV colon cancer and her liver is starting to fail. I am worried about all of the antibiotics they are putting into her to clear up the mrsa. I know that we will be very lucky if she gets out of the hospital alive.
Thanks for the vent.
Donna
